| Mark Williams claimed the last spot in the second round with a 10-6 win over Liu Chuang |
There was no morning session on Thursday but Mark Williams
made sure it was a successful first round for the Welsh participants in the
competition by making it four out of five progressing to the last 16. He joins
Matthew Stevens, Ryan Day and Jamie Jones after a 10-6 victory over Liu Chuang.
Already leading 6-3, the Welsh potting machine won the first three frames of
the session to move within one of victory. However Chuang was not ready to give
up and he won the next three tom move 9-6 behind but Williams stopped the
comeback by winning the 16th frame to set up an exciting looking
match against Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Also through to the second round was Ali Carter who recorded
a fantastic 10-1 win over Mark Davis. The Essex man was already 8-1 ahead after
Wednesday’s session and finished off the match in ease by winning the next two
frames. Carter will face Judd Trump in the next round.
The first of the best of 25 frames second round matches got
going on Thursday afternoon as Neil Robertson edged the first session 5-3
against David Gilbert. Tamworth’s Gilbert won the first frame and then the third
and fourth to hold a 3-1 lead at the interval. However The Australian hit back
winning the next four frames on the bounce including centuries of 106 and 131.
Meanwhile in the evening Stephen Maguire won the first
session of his semi-final against Joe Perry by the same scoreline. Perry won
the first frame but Maguire won the next four to race to a three frame
advantage. But Wisbech’s Perry won the sixth frame with a break of 68 and
despite Maguire taking the seventh, Perry won the final frame of the session to
trail by only two ahead of tomorrow’s second session.
