Mark Joyce secured a recorded a huge upset in York by beating world number one Judd Trump 6-5. |
Mark Joyce made the headlines at The Barbican on Sunday after
he battled back from 5-2 down to beat defending Champion Judd Trump 6-5. Trump
looked at considerable ease in the early stages romping to a 3-0 lead but a
nervous-looking Joyce snatched the last frame before the interval. Trump took a
lengthy five after a long safety battle on the colours but Joyce made it 4-2 by
winning frame six. Trump went within one of victory by securing the seventh but
Joyce dug deep as his confidence built and he churned out three frames on the
bounce to incredibly force a decider. A break of 49 in the final frame secured
the Walsall man one of his most memorable career wins to date.
He will face Ali Carter in the last 16 after the Essex man
beat veteran Steve Davis in the other afternoon match. The early stages of the
match were slow-going but Carter managed to build up a 3-0 lead. His
55-year-old opponent won the fourth to go into the interval 3-1 down but Carter
ran off the next two to go within a frame of victory. An excellent break of 85
gave Davis frame seven but it was only prolonging the inevitable as Carter won
frame eight to seal the win.
Marco Fu impressed during his evening match against Mark
Allen after he beat the world number eight 6-3. Fu got off to a fantastic
start, winning three of the first four frames with breaks of 91, 131 and 121. The
Hong Kong player extended his lead to 4-1 after the interval but Allen pulled
two back to close the gap to 4-3. Fu though remained in control and won frames
eight and nine for victory.
The other evening session match saw recent Premier League
winner Stuart Bingham cruise to a 6-2 win over Jack Lisowski. The 21-year-old
secured the first frame but Bingham fought back to win three on the bounce
before the interval. Lisowski closed the gap to 3-2 in frame five but Bingham
won another three consecutive frames to book a last 16 tie with Stephen
Maguire.
Earlier in the day during the morning session, Shaun Murphy
had beaten Robert Milkins 6-3. Although Milkins won the opening frame, Sale’s
Murphy won the next three to lead 3-1 at the break. However the Gloucester man
won two of the next three frames to trail only 4-3 but Murphy will play Graeme
Dott in the next round after winning frames eight and nine.
The other morning match saw Mark Davis ease to a 6-1 victory
over world number 65 Cao Yupeng. Davis was already 4-0 ahead at the interval
and extended the lead to 5-0 although Cao avoided the whitewash by taking frame
six. But Hastings man Davis secured a tie with John Higgins in the last 16 by
taking frame seven.
