German Masters Day 2

Anthony Hamilton caused a surprise as he defeated Judd Trump
5-4 in the afternoon session
Michael Holt completed an accomplished 5-1 defeat of Mark Williams as he progressed to the last 16 on Thursday morning. The Nottingham man started as he meant to go on with an excellent 144 clearance in the opening frame. Williams hit back with a 94 break in the next but Holt took the next two before the interval and also won frames five and six to secure the victory.

There was another surprise result on an outside table as Mark King whitewashed Stephen Maguire including breaks of 105 and 61. World 23 Marco Fu beat top-16 player Ricky Walden whilst Mark Allen recorded a 5-2 victory over Dominic Dale. The other match in the morning session saw Neil Robertson ease past Michael Wasley 5-1.

Judd Trump’s poor run of form continued in the afternoon session after he was defeated 5-4 by Anthony Hamilton. He trailed 3-1 at the interval and with the players trading the next two frames, Hamilton led 4-2. Trump managed to force an equaliser by taking frames seven and eight but a break of 57 helped Hamilton to an impressive victory.

On the main table, the man to beat Mark Selby progressed with a 5-2 win over Joe Perry. The Jester was 3-1 up at the interval but a 126 break from Perry closed the scores to 3-2. Selby hit back though and rounded off the win 114 and 71 in the following two frames. Elsewhere in the Tempadron, Ding Junhui thrashed Marcus Campbell 5-0, Graeme Dott overcame Dave Harold 5-3 and Shaun Murphy defeated Robert Milkins by the same scoreline.

Peter Lines kept up his excellent run in the competition after defeating Ken Doherty to book a place in the last 16. The Leeds man trailed 3-1 at the interval but won four frames on the bounce including breaks of 56, 55 and 51 to set up a tie with Marco Fu tomorrow afternoon.

On the TV table, Barry Hawkins recorded a confident 5-1 win over Mark Allen in the last 16. Allen won the first frame but Hawkins won five on the bounce, including century breaks of 102 and 122 in frames five and six to wrap up the victory. Neil Robertson returned to the arena for his second match of the day and recorded another 5-1 victory, this time over Andrew Higginson. Other last 16 matches during the evening session saw Michael Holt beat Kurt Maflin 5-3 whilst Matthew Stevens saw off Mark King after a deciding frame.
