Judd Trump will face Graeme Dott in the next round after squeezing past Barry Hawkins 6-5 |
Judd Trump needed a final frame decider to defeat Barry Hawkins
on Tuesday afternoon at The Masters. The pair were tied at 2-2 at the interval
whilst a break of 73 edged Trump ahead but a superb 109 break again drew
Hawkins level. And The Hawk ever-growing on confidence went 5-3 up with runs of
85 and 61 put the Kent man in a strong position. However, Trump pulled a frame
back by knocking in a 105 in the ninth whilst the International Champion took advantage
of a nervy Hawkins who missed two chances to take the match in the tenth as a
decider was forced. A poor break-off from Hawkins brought a red up the table
for an easy starter for Trump who duly rolled in another century, this time a
107, to seal the victory.
In the evening session, Shaun Murphy fended off a spirited
comeback from Ricky Walden to set up a quarter-final with John Higgins. A 79 break
from Murphy set him off on the front foot and he also took frames two and four
to lead 3-1 at the interval. A fine 130 break put him 4-1 up but Walden rolled
off the next three, including a 65 break in the eighth to draw level at 4-4. Murphy
edged back in front after winning a closely-fought frame nine although Walden
was set to force a decider after getting the snooker he require on the last
red. However, as he on the blue, he brushed the black and sportingly called a
foul on himself as no-one else had spotted the offence, allowing Murphy to
secure the 6-4 victory.
