Barry Hawkins claimed the sixth spot in the Winner's Group after beating Stephen Maguire 3-1 in the Group Six final. |
Stephen Maguire lost his third consecutive Championship
League group final as Barry Hawkins defeated him 3-1, to secure the penultimate
spot in the Winner’s Group. The Scot had previously lost out to Mark Allen and
Martin Gould in Groups Four and Five respectively and found himself trailing
when Hawkins hit back with a 65 in the opener after Maguire ran aground on 55
earlier in the frame. He did hit back with a 76 break in the second frame but
The Hawk secured the match with breaks of 62 and 46 in the next two frames.
Previously, Hawkins had come through his semi-final with a 3-0
whitewashing of Ryan Day although the Welshman did have the slight consolation
of holding the group’s highest break during his league phase match against Maguire.
The other semi saw Maguire defeat Hong Kong’s Marco Fu 3-1.
Those two along with Day and fifth placed Dominic Dale will
return for the final group of Championship League snooker in March where they
will be joined by Robert Milkins, Tom Ford and Andrew Higginson for the last
chance to qualify for the Winner’s Group. Eliminated from the competition were
Ricky Walden and Marcus Campbell who finished sixth and seventh respectively.
