Matthew Stevens impressed in last 16 of the World Open after
he defeated Shaun Murphy 5-3. The Welshman, who was using Mark Williams' cue as his had still not arrived at Haikou, trailed 3-1 at the interval after
Murphy had knocked in top breaks of 56 and 110. However Stevens came out on top
after the break, winning four frames on the bounce to seal the victory,
including a break of 73 in frame eight.
Judd Trump continued his excellent form after easing to a 5-1
win over Nigel Bond. Judd made an electric start, hitting breaks of 102, 111
and 83 in the first three frames although Bond did pull one back before the
interval. But Trump won the next two, incuding a 104 break in the fifth where
he will face Stevens.
Mark Selby cruised to a 5-1 win over Barry Hawkins another
afternoon match. Hawkins won the opener thanks to a break of 61 but he had no
answer for Selby who rattled off the next five on the bounce, including runs of
56 and 51.
He’ll face Neil Robertson who dominated another one-sided
match, whitewashing Graeme Dott. The Australian compiled top runs of 78, 86 and
73 on his way to the 5-0 victory.
Ricky Walden came from 4-2 down to defeat recent Welsh open
winner Stephen Maguire 5-4. The Chester man won the first two frames, including
a 104 break in the opener but Maguire rattled off four on the bounce to go
within a frame of victory. However, Walden managed to stop the rot and managed
to win the final three frames, with top breaks of 57 and 70.
Defending champion Mark Allen remained in the competition
thanks to a 5-2 victory over Robert Milkins. Allen started very poorly allowing
Gloucester’s Milkins to win the first two frames but the Ulsterman will have
been delighted to have gone into the interval level. He then won a further
three frames with top breaks of 61 and 73 to secure a Quarter-Finals where he’ll
face Walden.
The other Quarter-Final well see Ding Junhui face John Higgins
after the pair won both of their last 16 matches. Ding knocked in breaks of 53,
127 and 71 on his way to a 5-2 win over Hong Kong’s Marco Fu. Higgins meanwhile,
whitewashed Stuart Bingham 5-0 with the scale of the defeat being the biggest
surprise.
