Martin Gould is the 2013 Championship League Snooker Champion
after defeating Ali Carter 3-2 in the Winner’s Group final at Crondon Park on
Thursday night. The win secures him a place in next season’s Premier League as
well as netting £10,000 for taking the winner’s group, to go with the £21,000
already won during his other group matches.
Carter took the first frame on the black though after Gould
had run aground on 58. Gould dominated the second to draw level but Carter
remained in control after knocking in a break of 55 to lead 2-1. However Gould
showed his break building abilities by knocking in breaks of 68 and 100 to
secure the last two frames.
Gould had whitewashed recent PTC Grand Finals winner Ding
Junhui in his semi-final earlier that evening. The man from Pinner hit breaks
of 84, 45 and 37 on course to the 3-0 win. There was also a whitewash in the
other semi as Essex man Carter defeated Group Seven winner Marco Fu. The man
who topped the group stage table knocked in breaks of 50, 30 and 64 to secure
his spot in the final.
There was disappointment for the three other players who
missed out on the lucrative play-off spots. Group Four winner Mark Allen missed
out on a top-four spot on frames won whilst John Higgins and Barry Hawkins
finished sixth and seventh respectively.
