Ben Woollaston pulled out an excellent comeback to come back from 3-1 down to beat mark Williams 4-3. Despite his recent hit-and-miss form, Williams played very well in the early stages of the match including top breaks of 73 and 93. A 73 from Woollaston allowed him to take the fifth and he also won the sixth and a long red from the Leicester man set him up to win the decider with a break of 70.

Joe Perry’s excellent start to his match against Staurt Bingham paved his way to a 3-0 victory. Top breaks of 60 and 57 put Perry 3-0 up and although Bingham won the next two, including a 90 break in the fourth, Cambridge’s Perry took a scrappy sixth.

Runner-up in the Scottish Open (EPTC6) Anthony McGill also secured his place in the next round thanks to a 4-2 win over Robert Milkins. Breaks of 61 and 74 helped him to a 3-1 advantage and although Milkins hit back to take the fifth, McGill took a closely-contested sixth.

The other remaining last 16 match saw Marco Fu defeat Mark Joyce 4-2. Fu won the opener with a 77 although Joyce hit back with a 78. Fu won the next two to go 3-1 and despite Joyce winning the fifth, Fu secured victory by taking the sixth.

A series of over-running and close matches coupled with the venue’s one-table setup, meant the evening session started several hours late. This match saw Tom Ford pull back a 3-1 deficit to defeat Jack Lisowski in the first of the last 16 matches. Despite Ford knocking in an excellent 134 break in the second frame, the tournament’s highest, it was Lisowski who dominated the opening stages. However the pendulum began to swing and Ford won the next two to force a decider which he took thanks to a 55 break.

The last scheduled match of the day between close friends Mark Allen and Joe Swail didn’t actually get going until five past midnight on Friday morning! Allen notched up top breaks of 58, 64 and 65 to record a whitewash over the man who helped him progress as a youngster.
