Ding Junhui pulled out an excellent comeback to come from 3-0
behind to defeat Neil Robertson 4-3 in the Final of the PTC Grand finals. Ding
looked down and out but finished the match with an incredible pot success of
99% to scoop the £100,000 winner’s prize.
Ding did little wrong in the first three frames but Robertson
managed to keep him off the table, knocking in breaks of 88, 58 and 60 to race
to a seemingly unassailable 3-0 lead.
However, Ding battled back and pulled a frame back with
breaks of 52 and 70 before knocking in his eighth century of the week, a 130,
to trail by just one frame. Robertson had chances to win the match in frame six
but it was Ding who forced the decider and after knocking in a tricky long red,
went onto compile a 98 break and would have knocked in another century had he
not gone in-off from the black.
The Chinese had earlier thrashed Norway’s Kurt Maflin in the
second semi-final on Sunday afternoon. He knocked in top breaks of 53 and 73 to
secure the 4-0 victory.
Robertson, meanwhile, made much harder work of winning his
semi-final against Tom Ford. Again, The Australian seemed to be cruising to the
finish line at 3-0 up thanks to breaks of 50, 65 and 80 to go 3-0 ahead but the
pendulum swung the way of Leicester’s Ford after that. He made breaks of 60, 51
and 66 to draw level but Robbo managed to avoid embarrassment by taking the
final frame.
