There were a few shock results elsewhere in the last 64 in New Delhi, including Anthony McGill’s 4-1 win over world number seven Barry Hawkins. The Scot only just made it through his wildcard round match yesterday but was in hot form today, hitting top runs of 123 and 103 as he shocked this year’s World Championship finalist.
Gary Wilson continued the good start to his second spell as a professional, with a 4-0 whitewashing of world number 21 Dominic Dale. The Gateshead man, who reached the last four of the Rotterdam Open, knocked in breaks of 66, 125 and 72 and will face Marco Fu in the last 32.
John Higgins breezed through his last 64 match against Sheffield teenager Joel Walker, whitewashing him 4-0. He’ll play Li Yan tomorrow as he defeated Jeff Cundy 4-3. Irishman Fergal O’Brien is also through to the last 32 after he beat Alex Davies 4-1.
Mark Selby also had it easy against wildcard player Dharminder Lilly who had received a bye after the withdrawal of Liam Highfield, and beat him 4-0. Meanwhile, Mike Dunn sprung a surprise on Ken Doherty with the Cleveland man 4-2.
Teenager Ratchayothin Yotharuck won the all Thai-battle against the experienced James Wattana, keeping his composure to win the decider with an excellent break of 131. Tom Ford’s match also went the distance against Wales’ Jamie Jones but it was the Leicester man who progressed.
Andrew Higginson defeated Scotland’s Jamie Burnett 4-2 in the morning session whilst in the final set of matches, Stuart Bingham overcame Liu Chuang 4-1 whilst China’s Lyu Haotian was defeated by Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon.
