Ryan Day swooped with a 3-0 win over Andrew Higginson to secure the last spot in this year’s Championship League Winner’s Group in the Group 7 final.
The Welshman started out on the right track with a break of 87 in the first frame, before securing the next two he needed to progress to the Winner’s Group.
Higginson had only been given a late call-up to this year’s Championship League, after Michael Holt had pulled out due to him competing in the Asian Tour event taking place this week in China.
Pontycrymmer potter Day had previously beaten Mark King 3-1 in their semi-final with top breaks of 64 and 68, whilst St Helen’s Higginson overcame John Higgins in a closely fought encounter across the hall at Crondon Park in the other semi.
Higgins had dominated the group, beating all six of his competitors in the round robin stage but was unable to produce when it really mattered.
The other players to be involved in the final group were Peter Ebdon and Marcus Campbell, who both finished with two wins each and Mark Williams, who finished bottom of the group with just one win.
