Recent six-red World Championship winner Mark Davis kept up his excellent run of form to secure a spot in the Australian Goldfields Open semis with a 5-2 victory over Martin Gould. He will face Barry Hawkins who knocked out world number 41 Matthew Selt, 5-3, although Selt will be pleased with his performances at the event after defeating Stuart Bingham and Ryan Day. Peter Ebdon won a third deciding frame match in a row to defeat Shaun Murphy in another long encounter which lasted over three hours. Ebdon will face Marco Fu in the other semi-final who raised a few eyebrows in knocking Stephen Lee out by 5 frames to 1. Fu has struggled for form over the past season or so but will be pleased to make good progress in this event.
Semi-Finals
Hawkins overcame the veteran Mark Davis in the semis with a
6-4 victory to book his place in a ranking event final for the first ever time.
He lead 3-1 at the interval and although Davis battled back to 3-3, The Hawk
remained strong to secure the win to send him through. Meanwhile, Ebdon secured
the other final spot by defeating Fu 6-2. The Hong Kong player was unable to
effectively fight Ebdon’s gritty style of play and with the 2006 World Champion
winning four of the first five frames, he had little trouble securing the
additional two he needed for victory.
Final
Playing in his first ever ranking event final, Hawkins went
one better by winning it and comfortably at that with a 9 frames to 3 victory
over Ebdon. Despite Ebdon taking the first frame, Hawkins looked solid in the
opening session winning the next four on the bounce although Peter was relieved
to escape the session only 5-3 down as he won two of the next three. But going
into the evening session, Dartford’s Hawkins kept the momentum going by winning
the four frames he needed without reply, with the highlight being a 133 break
in frame 9.
