Australian Goldfields Open - Day 3

Jamie Burnett caused a big upset by defeating Mark Selby
5-3
Jamie Burnett recorded a massive upset in the Goldfields open as he knocked out world number 1 Mark Selby, at the first hurdle. The Scot was already 3-1 up at the interval and despite Selby winning the fifth, Burnett went one frame from victory by making it 4-2. Selby snatched another frame back but the world number 37 won the eight frame with a break of 62 to go through a 5-3 winner. Martin Gould, who has not performed particularly well during the last few events, secured his spot in the last 16 with a 5-3 win over Ken Doherty. The early encounters were close with the score locked at 3-3 after six frames, but Gould won the next two to ensure he progressed.

Ding Junhui cruised through to the last 16 with a 5-0 whitewashing of Alan McManus and will face Peter Ebdon in the next round. There was also an easy win for Barry Hawkins who defeated Xiao Guodong 5-1. Hawkins will face Matthew Stevens in the next round.

Meanwhile the first two last 16 matches got underway in the evening session, seeing Shaun Murphy progress with a 5-1 victory over Tom Ford. Ford started well by winning the first frame but Murphy went on a five-frame streak to secure the match, including breaks of 80 and 95. Stephen Lee also eased into the quarter-finals, defeating Jamie Cope 5-2. Lee was 3-0 up and despite Stoke’s Cope winning the fourth, Lee remained in control to secure the match in the seventh frame.
