Australian Goldfields Open - Day 2

Matt Selt caused an upset as he defeated an in-form Stuart
Bingham 5-3.
The surprise of the day was defending champion Stuart Bingham being knocked out of the tournament by world number 41 Matthew Selt. Bingham had been in excellent form in recent times winning APTC1 and finishing as runner-up in the Wuxi Classic but Romford’s Selt progressed 5-4. He won the first two although Bingham made it 2-2 at the interval and despite Selt winning the fifth, Bingham fought back to make it 4-3. However Selt kept his composure to win the last two frames to reach the last 16. Peter Ebdon also progressed after a deciding frame winner after defeating Michael Holt. Ebdon was 3-1 up at the interval and was 4-2 ahead after six frames and despite Holt making it 4-4, Ebdon’s experience showed as he knocked in a break of 61 to take the frame.

It also took a deciding frame for Shaun Murphy to progress to the last 16 as he scraped past Marcus Campbell. Murphy had not won a first round ranking event match for almost 6 months but a 3-1 lead at the interval seemed to suggest a buck to the trend. The advantage was stretched to 4-1 but Campbell won three on the bounce to force a decider but Sale’s Murphy stopped the rot to win the match. Cao Yupeng caused a surprise result as he defeated Ali Carter 5-3. The world number 84 was 4-0 ahead at the interval and despite a mini-fight back from Carter to make it 4-3, Yupeng won the eighth frame to seal a spot in the last 16.

Another man in form, Mark Davis made short work of Jack Lisowski with a 5-2 win over the 21-year-old. Last week’s six reds world champion held a 3-1 lead at the break and secured a further two frames required to beat Lisowski. Finally, Marco Fu also eased through his first round match with a 5-1 victory over Joe Perry.
