Matthew Stevens is through to the second round following a 5-3 win over Liang Wembo |
The Australian Goldfields Open got underway in Bendigo near
Melbourne on Monday morning with eight games on the opening day.
Matthew Stevens, who returned to action in last week’s 6-reds
world championship after a back injury, made his way through the first round,
beating Liang Wembo 5-3. The Welshman knocked in a break of 128 in frame three
and pressed home his 3-1 interval advantage to secure a place in the last 16.
Tom Ford also progressed with a 5-2 win over Dominic Dale. The opening stages
were close with the scores all square at the interval but Leicester’s Ford
stepped up his game and took the next three to secure victory.
Local hero Neil Robertson progressed to the last 16 as he
recorded a comfortable 5-1 win over veteran Nigel Bond. Robertson scored
heavily in the first four frames with breaks of 135, 81, 92 and 113 and despite
Bond preventing the whitewash winning frame five, the Aussie saw out the match
by taking the sixth frame. Meanwhile, recent Wuxi Classic Champion Ricky Walden
saw his Australian Open brought to an abrupt end as Jamie Cope ran out a 5-4
winner. Another match won after a deciding frame saw Ryan Day defeat Andrew
Higginson whilst Rory McLeod threw away a 3-0 lead to be also defeated in a
deciding frame by Stephen Lee.
There were also two wildcard round matches played during the
morning although neither of the Australian wildcard players were successful in
their matches. China’s Cao Yupeng defeated Johl Younger 5-2 whilst Alan McManus
Whitewashed James Mifsud 5-0.
