Shanghai Masters Day 2

Jamie Cope secured an impressive victory on in the First round, knocking out the world number 1 Mark Selby 5-1. The Stoke man led the defending champion 3-1 at the interval and after winning a tight fifth frame had the simplest tasks of securing the sixth frame to claim the win. Meanwhile, Stephen Maguire saw off the challenge of Peter Ebdon with a lengthy 5-3 victory. Maguire was 3-2 down at one point although the Scot fought back to lead 4-3 and won the eighth frame which lasted over 70 minutes to book a place in the last 16.

Fans’ favourite Ding Junhui’s drab run of form continued as he was dumped out of the competition by Mark King. Ding looked comfortable with a 3-0 lead but Essex man King won four frames on the bounce to lead 4-3. Ding managed to force a closely-fought decider but a double on the green secured victory for King. After beating Marco Fu yesterday, teenager Lu Haotian was knocked out of the competition by Mark Allen. Haotian was 2-1 ahead at one stage but Allen won four in a row to book a place in the last 16. Shaun Murphy and Ali Carter also squeezed their way through into the last 16 with deciding frame wins over Dominic dale and Robert Milkins respectively.

Earlier, during the afternoon session, the final two wildcard round matches were complteted with both providing surprise results. Jin Long beat Jimmy Robertson after a deciding frame whilst Chen Feilong defeated Irishman Fergal O’Brien.
