Nigel Bond lifted the 2012 World Seniors Championship on
Sunday evening following a 2-0 victory over Tony Chappel. However, Chappel had
played magnificently to reach the final after revealing that he had only
started practicing seriously a few weeks before the qualifying event. But Bond,
who is still on the main tour, showed his match sharpness by defeating the
Welshman in the final to claim the £18,000 prize.
Bond had defeated the defending champion, Darren Morgan, 2-0
in the semis following another 2-0 victory, this time over Tony Knowles, in the
quarter-finals. Chappel’s 2-0 victory over Canadian Alain Robidoux in the
quarters set him up with a semi-final tie with New Zealander Dene O’Kane who he
beat 2-1 after a final frame decider. O’Kane had earlier beaten one of the
favourites, Jimmy White, 2-1 in the quarters whilst the other quarter saw
Morgan record a 2-0 win over Steve Davis.
