Ali Carter secured the 2013 German Masters after coming back
from 5-3 down to beat Marco Fu 9-6. The world number 11 added the title to the
Welsh Open and Shanghai Masters in front of a sell-out crowd of over 2,000 in
the Tempodron, Berlin.
Fu took the early initiative by taking the opener despite
Carter getting the two snookers he required in the closing stages and a break
of 55 doubled his advantage as he won the next. Carter produced a 55 break in
the third to cut the advantage but Fu knocked in 13 reds and 13 blacks in frame
four to make 104 but missed out on making a maximum break when he missed the 14th
red but still led at the interval.
Carter levelled the match by winning the next two, including
a break of 70 in frame five but Fu reinstated his lead with a run of 83 in
frame seven. Carter had a chance to level with the final frame of the session
but missed a red on 30 allowing Fu to win the frame and take a 5-3 lead into
the evening session.
But it was Carter who seized the initiative in the early
stages of the second session with the Essex man producing breaks of 116 and 121
to draw level before taking the eleventh 67-0. He also had a chance of winning
the 12th but missed, allowing Fu to level at 6-6.
Both players had chances in the next frame but it was Carter
who re-took the lead with a break of 71. A break of 41 saw Ali go within a
frame of victory and after a succession of missed pots from Fu, he secured the
title with the final frame scoreline of 61-1.
