Matthew Stevens was the first man through to the World Open,
causing another upset, defeating Neil Robertson after a final frame decider.
The Welshman beat Judd Trump in the Quarter-Finals of Friday but made his semi
hard work, not being able to put a number of frames away despite being points
away from sealing them.
The first four frames were shared and the match continued in
a close trend with there never being a frame difference between the two
players. Breaks of 79 and 55 put Stevens 4-3 up but Robertson went within a
frame of victory, compiling a 107 in the eighth and nicking the ninth after Stevens
had run aground on 65. However Stevens secured his first place in a ranking
event final since the 2008 Bahrain Championship, by knocking in breaks of 60
and 51.
In the other semi-final Mark Allen played excellent to defeat
a recently on-form John Higgins 6-2. Higgins had completed 5-0 whitewashes in last
two matches over Stuart Bingham and Ding Junhui and took the opener in this
with an excellent 90 break. Allen went ahead winning the next two though
including a 119 in the second but a 58 break from John tied the scores at the break.
However, The Ulsterman played unbelievably following the
interval, winning all four frames whilst Higgins wasn’t even able to score a
point. Allen recorded breaks of 56, 81 and 76 to cruise to victory.
