Ronnie O’Sullivan joined Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump, Michael
White and Barry Hawkins in the quarter-finals after seeing off last year’s
fellow semi-finalist Ali Carter. Carter had never beaten O’Sullivan at a full
ranking event and with The Rocket 9-7 up after the second session the record
looked likely to continue. O’Sullivan won four of the next five frames with top
breaks of 88, 106 and 89 to progress to the last eight.
He’ll face Stuart Bingham who came through a closely fought
match with Mark Davis. The scores were locked at 8-8 coming into the final
session and the next four were also shared, with Bingham making notable breaks
of 77 and 70. However, the Essex man finished well after the interval to pull
himself over the finish line with breaks of 111 and 57 to win the next three
frames.
Ricky Walden also secured a quarter-final spot against White
after defeating Robert Milkins 13-11. The Chester man came into the concluding
session 10-6 ahead but looked in danger early on as Milkins won four out of
five to close to 11-10. But breaks of 79 and 86 in frames 22 and 24 were enough
to see him secure the match.
Ding Junhui made a strong finish to his last 16 match against
Mark King to win 13-9. King had led 6-2 after the opening session although Ding
had an excellent second session, winning seven frames to go 9-7 up. Ding took
the 17th with a 69 but King won the next two to close to 10-9. But
runs of 104, 987 and 52 saw the Chinese through and he will face Barry Hawkins.
