Peter Lines produced a superb comeback in his first round match against Matthew Stevens to battle back from 4-1 down to win 5-4. The Leeds cue man won the opener with a run of 61 but Stevens seemed to be charging to victory as he won the next three in a row. However, Lines stopped the rot by taking the sixth on the colours and went onto take the next three to progress to the last 16.
In the other first round match in the evening session, Marco Fu made short work of Cao Yupeng, whitewashing him with runs of 74, 78, 72 and 78.
Earlier in the day, Mark Davis kept up his good form by defeating Ali Carter 5-2. Davis recently won both the six-reds World Championship and General Cup in Hong Kong, and started off well in this one, winning the first three frames including breaks of 122 and 102. Carter replied before the interval with a run of 67 and closed to 3-2 with a run of 65 in the next. But Davis won the sixth and after a couple of errors from both players, sealed the match on the colours in the seventh.
This tournament was the first time David Grace had qualified for a venue but his tournament was brought to an abrupt end as Barry Hawkins beat him 5-0, with top breaks of 107, 55 and 70.
Pre-tournament favourite Neil Robertson is also through after beating Wang Yunchen, who beat Joe Perry in the wildcard round yesterday. The Australian hit top breaks of 122 and 73.
The two outstanding wildcard round matches were also played out today, and Andrew Higginson was an unfortunate victim as he lost to Lin Shuai, 5-4. Lin was 4-2 up at one point and although Widnes’ Higginson forced a decider, Lin sealed the win taking frame nine on the colours.
Mark King had no problems during his wildcard round match as he beat Zhu Yinghui 5-1, with top runs of 85 and 51.
