The Shanghai Masters continues to provide upsets as on Wednesday Kyren Wilson shocked Stuart Bingham 5-1. The 21-year-old from Northampton played excellently and was already 4-0 up at the interval, with a top break of 97. Bingham won the next with a 56 but the match was sealed as Wilson knocked in a 54 in the sixth.

World number five Stephen Maguire also slipped up, as he was beaten 5-2 by Xiao Guodong. Xiao also lead 4-0 at the break, with top runs of 89, 54 and 69. Maguire did win the next two to close to 4-2 but Xiao took the seventh on the colours and will face Peter Lines in the last 16.

Mark Allen is another seeded player to have bitten the dust as he was well beaten by Ryan Day, who won 5-1. The Ulsterman won the opener but Day, who was once ranked as high as number 6, won five in a row, with runs of 72, 55 and 73 to cruise into the last 16.

Ricky Walden, who is currently number seven in the world, is also out of the tournament as he was beaten 5-3 by Martin Gould. Gould won the first two but Walden hit back with three in a row to take a 3-2 lead. However Gould was not ready to lie down and battled back magnificently, taking the next three, with top breaks of 75 and 69.

Another qualifier, Mark King, made his way through to the second round by beating Graeme Dott 5-3. Dott has had a terrible start to this season and is now down to 18 in the rankings, and started this match poor as King won the first two, with a top run of 106. The Scot did respond well though, winning the next three on the bounce but King finished well and breaks of 54 and 70 helped him take the last three for the match.

Mark Joyce came very close to an upset against Robert Milkins but eventually lost out in a deciding frame. After sharing the first four frames, Joyce went within a frame of victory as he took the fifth and sixth but was unable to finish off Gloucester man Milkins who secured the match winning the next three.

He’ll face Mark Selby tomorrow who defeated wildcard entry Lin Shuai. Lin, who beat Andrew Higginson yesterday, won the opener but Selby took the next three to lead at the interval. Lin closed to 3-2 but Selby secured the sixth and seventh, with a top run of 120.

The final first round match of the day saw Ding Junhui beat an in-from David Gilbert 5-2. Ding led 3-1 at the interval with top runs of 68 and 129. He then went 4-1 up with a 106 break but Tamworth’s Gilbert won the next on the colours. But Ding finished off the match by taking frame seven.
